Identity vs Activity

I recently read a quote that is true … but also (I think) not true.

“Your identity determines your activity, your activity does not determine your identity.”

In my head, I know that I’m not what I do but I have lived my life doing a lot of activities and I know that my identity (in the eyes of others) has been directly linked to what I do – it just is. I have been the ANZ bank person, the World Vision lady, ‘one of the two Sue’s from Hagar” and lately – I’m Flame Cambodia’s founder.

I have made a choice to stop saying “I’m just a farm kid from Kio Kio” because that was saying to me, “You’re not a leader, you’re a nobody, and not-too-much-smart.” (Absolutely NOT a reflection at all on the farming community – this is only what I was hearing within myself)

I have now started saying, “I’m a child of God, chosen and called for what I’m doing” because THAT says, … “I’m a person with God-given skills and abilities who is joining God in what He is doing in, around, and through me.”

When my identity is clear, my activities are more impactful -it just is.

That makes my version of the quote above …

“When my activities come from a healthy, strong identity – I’m fulfilled and effective.”

Watch this space …
