You don't need to know anything new
In the knowledge era in which we find ourselves, there is an ridiculous amount of data, facts and information available for consumption.
Brennan Manning, a man whose writings I enjoy very much, died in 2013. He wrote from a place of total honesty and I can relate to him. He tells the story of talking with his mentor who said to him “Brennan, you don’t need to learn anything new about God. You’ve got enough knowledge about God to last you three hundred years. The most urgent need in your life is to trust what you already know.”
It’s very challenging for me to boil down the vast amounts of knowledge that is in my brain to the absolute basics and then just trust what I already know.
I am fascinated by the prayer Paul prayed in Ephesians 3:19 “I pray that … you would know the love of God that surpasses knowledge …” Maybe I need to stop trying to wrap words around my faith journey in an attempt to increase my knowledge. Maybe I just need to trust what I already know. … and that is … God is nice – and he likes me.
