Keep the main thing the main thing
I love bullet points. I read emails and scan them for ‘what is the main thing here?’ I know there is etiquette around emails, but for me, the best email is one that simply states what you are writing for and what you want to know from me. I don’t need you to ask me how I am or tell me how nice it was to meet last week, actually, you don’t even need to use a greeting– just tell me what you want to tell me, no need for padding, no need for ‘fluff’.
For those who have been offended by my emails, I apologise, but also want to tell you that I probably won’t change the way I write them because my desire to keep the main thing the main thing is too strong in me.
I think there were some disciples who had bullet point brains like me. There were 365 rules the Jewish people lived by and they asked Jesus “tell us what is the most important commandment.” What is the main thing? Jesus told them in bullet point form:
Love God
Love others
So – there it is – the main thing - Love God and love others.
The way I see it is if I keep the main thing the main thing, the rest of life’s issues will fall into place or disappear altogether.
